Becoming familiar with … Listening You are going to listen to five people expressing their opinions on different means of transport. First you will have 45 seconds to study the task below, then you will hear the recording twice. While listening, match the speakers (1–5) with the statements (A–G). There are two extra statements that you should not use. Write your answers in the spaces provided. After the second listening, you will have 45 seconds to check your answers. A doesn’t think trains and buses will ever improve B had an unsuccessful experience of car-sharing C wants the government to increase the tax on cars D considers cyclists to be a dangerous nuisance E says people should be encouraged to use public transport F thinks more money should be spent on road repairs G believes you can’t stop progress Different opinions on means of transport Speaker 1 Speaker 2 Speaker 3 Speaker 4 Speaker 5 22 05 TIP Read and listen to the instructions very carefully as they will tell you what • exactly you are required to do. They will also tell you the exact number of extra choices (i.e. the number of items you “should not use/will not need”). Use the 45-second preparation time to carefully read the opinions, under- • lining some keywords in each of them. Do not expect, however, to hear them in the recording exactly as they are written on the question sheet. Rather brainstorm about words and expressions that could relate to and paraphrase them. Remember that each of the choices may be used only ONCE. In other • words: there is only ONE possible solution for each matching. Don’t be afraid, however, to preselect more than one option as you listen for the first time . Decide between these choices when you listen again .
