Writing skills Pro and con texts Some texts, like reports, just give you the facts about events. Other texts give the author’s opinion, and he or she tries to convince you of something. The exercises on this page will help you to plan and write pro and con texts like these, for example for a school newspaper. 1 Research the topic. a) Do you think teenagers should be allowed to vote at the age of 16? Collect arguments for and against a voting age of 16 in a form that you find useful (notes, word web, grid, …). b) Now decide if your pro and con text is going to be for or against voting at the age of 16. 2 Create a clear structure. a) The notes on the right are for a text about mobile phones in schools. Use the structure on the left to put them in an order that makes sense. Match the labels on the left (1–8) with the sentences on the right (A–H). b) Compare your ideas with a partner’s and discuss the differences. Can you agree on the best order? c) Now make a plan for your text on voting at 16. Use the same structure you made in a) or b). 3 Write your text. a) Use your plan from exercise 2 and write your text. b) Read your text again. • Are your arguments clear? • Have you used connecting words correctly? • Check your spelling and grammar. c) Show the text to a classmate and ask for his or her opinion. Share your ideas and try to improve both of your texts. TIP After you have researched the topic, you may have more arguments against your first opinion than for it. If so, you may wish to change your opinion!
