ALASKA 104 minutes, USA (1996) Rating: This movie is a typical family adventure that features beautiful landscapes, a polar bear, two teenagers, and a poacher. As can be guessed from the title, the story is set in Alaska. Jake Barnes (played by Dirk Benedict) moves there from Chicago after his wife dies, with his children, 13-year-old Jessie (Thora Birch) and 15-year-old Sean (Vincent Kartheiser). He starts his own air transport service, but one night his plane crashes far from home in bad weather. When he doesn’t come back, Jessie and Sean begin a journey full of danger over the mountains to find him. On the way they rescue a young polar bear whose mother has been killed by a heartless poacher named Perry (Charlton Heston). The bear, Cubby, then follows them wherever they go. Unfortunately the storyline is predictable, the screenplay is weak and therefore doesn’t allow the actors to shine in their roles, and the score sounds old-fashioned. However, in the end the movie is saved by some exciting action scenes and especially by the amazing beauty of Alaska. Some of the views that are shown are really breathtaking. This is definitely not the greatest screen entertainment, but although there is much to criticize, Alaska also has its good moments. It offers something to people of all ages, so it’s a movie which children and adults can enjoy watching together. b) Look at the structure of this review and identify its parts.
