136 one hundred and thi r ty - s i x G12 Bedingungssätze (Typ 3) ➝ p. 55.3 Conditional sentences (Type 3) Beim Bedingungssatz Typ 3 geht es um eine Situation, die bereits in der Vergangenheit liegt und damit nicht mehr möglich ist: Peter traf neulich seinen Freund Josh wieder, der ihm erzählte, dass er vor ein paar Tagen große Probleme gehabt hat. Peter denkt sich: If I had known about his situation, I would have helped him. Peter stellt sich also vor, wie es gewesen wäre, wenn er von Joshs Problemen gewusst hätte – dann hätte er sich nämlich bei seinem Freund gemeldet, um ihm zu helfen. Die Bedingung gilt als nicht mehr erfüllbar , da die Situation bereits in der Vergangenheit liegt und vorbei ist. Im if -Satz verwendest du das past perfect , das hier auf die Vergangenheit verweist. Im Hauptsatz wird meist would + have + past participle (= 3. Verbform) verwendet. Bedingung im if -Satz: Folge im Hauptsatz: If they hadn’t watched TV until late, they wouldn’t have been so tired. If only she had asked me before, she wouldn’t have had any problems. Folge im Hauptsatz: Bedingung im if -Satz: The man would have been in real trouble if that girl hadn’t found him. What would have happened if he had fallen from those rocks? Die Kurzform „’d“ kann „would“ oder „had“ sein: If I ’d known him before, I ’d have invited him to my party. = If I had known him before, I would have invited him to my party. Merk dir einfach: Kein „would“ im if -Satz! If only … Sätze mit „If only …“ können auch ganz alleine stehen. Sie drücken häufig einen Wunsch aus: Jack: If only we had taken an umbrella.
