78 seventy - e i ght Skills workshop 4 Reading for information 1 What’s it all about? What special days are there in your country? Are there days when you wear special clothes? What do you wear? On which days do you eat special food in your country? What do you eat? When you are looking for information for a project, for example, you will often need to read factual texts. Internet pages, newspaper and magazine articles and leaflets are all factual texts. The skills on this page will help you to get information from factual texts more quickly. Skimming When you read a factual text the first time, don’t read every word! Look at the title and the pictures. Then look through the text as quickly as you can. Think while you read: What is the text about? Look for the word or words which answer this question. If you can, highlight the word(s). READING SKI LLS Read the three texts on page 79 quickly. What are they about? Think of a title for the Internet page. 2 Different pieces of information Scanning What kind of information are you looking for in the text (a name? a date? a number? information about a special topic?) Look through the text and stop when you get to a word or sentence which gives you that information. You can highlight or underline the words, or take notes. READING SKI LLS a) Find the time of year or date when the events in each text happen. b) Look at each of the three texts on page 79 again.
