72 seventy - two her own home and she could find her way around in the dark. Her only problem now was that she didn’t know where the second man was. Was he near the living room door? She took one step, then another. She was through the door and almost safe. “Oh no, you don’t!” The other man was there in the hall, between her and the stairs. He went towards her again, but she was too quick for him. She turned and ran into the bedroom. But in the bedroom Sue felt that she had made a mistake. It was a very small room. Even in the dark, it wasn’t easy to get out. As she walked quietly around the bed, she could hear that the man had found the door. He felt his way into the room. Then … Crash! The man fell over something, and she quickly took her chance. She climbed over the bed and ran out of the room, through the hall and up the stairs. She closed the door behind her and locked it. Then she ran out into the street and shouted for help as loudly as she could … G “It’s a Russian icon, small but very valuable,” the police officer told the Clarkes. “Those smugglers didn’t want UK Customs to catch them. So they looked for someone to be their courier. Someone whose bags the Customs officers wouldn’t check. Of course, they planned to take it back again as soon as Sue had gone through Customs at Heathrow.” “But I stopped them,” said Mr Clarke. “That bloke I saw was one of them. The one who put his hand in Sue’s handbag.” “That’s right,” said the police officer. “So they followed you back here and waited until Sue was alone. They thought she would be helpless. How wrong they were!” “I’ve always thought it must be exciting to be a courier,” laughed Sue. “But now I understand just how exciting it can be.” Then she heard the door at the top of the stairs to the basement. At first she thought her mother or her father had come back to the house. But she knew her parents’ footsteps, and these were different ones: two men, one heavier than the other. Sue was scared but she went into the hall and shouted, “Who’s there? What do you want?” E Both men were near her now. Where had she smelt that aftershave before? At the airport in Moscow! And again, in Heathrow! “Who are you?” Sue asked again. But they didn’t speak. She tried to push past them, but the bigger one took her arm and pushed her onto the floor. Then the men went into the bedroom. Sue was really frightened. She had to get out! She touched something on the wall behind her. It was the fuse-box. F The lights went out and one of the men shouted angrily. He had fallen over something. Then both men were quiet again. Sue listened. One of the men was coming towards her. He was trying to move quietly, but she could hear him. She waited until she was sure which side he was coming from, then she moved to the other side and started to move carefully towards the door. Sue was still scared, but now she felt that she had an advantage over the men.
