One of England’s big mysteries The ancient circle of stones at Stonehenge is one of the biggest mysteries in the south of England. The men and women who built Stonehenge used stones which weighed between five and 40 tons. Scientists think Stone Age people built the circle between 3,500 and 5,000 years ago. The stones which they used came from as far away as Wales, but the people had no machines to carry them. Nobody knows how they did it, or why. The stones stand so that you cansee thesunbetween them when it rises on the longest day of the year. This day was probably an important festival in the religion of the Stone Age people. Maybe the stones were a kind of observatory which told them what was the longest day of the year. Today Stonehenge is very popular with tourists whose coaches stop at Stonehenge on the way to Wales and the south west of England. But the tourists and other visitors who come have damaged the stones. So now the owners of Stonehengehavebuilt a fence that protects the stones, and only special visitors can walk into the circle. The awesome stone circle people built thousands of years ago will always be a mystery. ➝ WB 45, 1 ➝ WB 45, 2 4 Check-in Language 2 Talkwise Text Wordwise Check-out Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
