A No one knew who murdered Sir Charles Baskerville at his old house, Baskerville Hall, on Dartmoor. People said that it was a terrible hound and that it glowed in the dark. They called it the Hound of the Baskervilles, and lots of themwouldn’t go on the moor when it was dark. They were too afraid. Sir Charles had no wife and no children. So the only heir to the big house was Sir Charles’ nephew, young Sir Henry Baskerville. Sir Henry arrived from Canada, but before he went to live at Baskerville Hall, he visited the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant DrWatson at 221b Baker Street, London. B When he entered Holmes’ flat, Sir Henry was so scared that he was shaking. “What’s the matter?” asked Holmes. “Quick, Watson! Give this man a cup of tea!” “My name is Henry Baskerville,” said Sir Henry. “I’m the only heir to Baskerville Hall, but I’m too scared to live there. People say that a terrible hound lives on the moor, and that it kills the people in the Baskerville family. Is this hound real? Will you help me, Mr Holmes? A man with a black beard was following him. “Very interesting,” said Holmes. C The next day Holmes, Watson and Sir Henry arrived on Dartmoor. At Baskerville Hall, Barrymore, the servant, took their bags. “Holmes!” whisperedWatson. “Barrymore has a black beard!” “You should leave this place, Sir Henry!” said Barrymore. “The hound of the Baskervilles will kill you like it killed your poor uncle!” Just then they all heard a loud noise. “W-what’s that?” cried Sir Henry. He was shaking again. “It’s only my hunting dog,” said Barrymore. “It smells visitors, you see. Dogs always know when someone new is in the house.” D The next day Holmes, Watson and Sir Henry went for a walk on the moor. “Sir Henry,” said Holmes, “why are you wearing one black boot and one brown boot?” “They’re the only boots I have now,” said Sir Henry. “First, someone stole a black boot frommy hotel room in London. It was new, and I had never worn it. The next morning one of my old brown boots was missing.” Suddenly they heard a terrible noise. It sounded like a huge hound on the moor. But they could see nothing. Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
