Red Line 3, Coursebook

32 th i r ty - two Fast – but not fast enough! Today the police stopped one of the fastest pickpockets in London, Greg F. Thanks to the Tube, he robbed five people in different places in London within two hours. How did he do it? Greg, 15, left home at eleven o’clock and got onto theTube at Monument station. He stole a leather jacket from a teenager in the queue at the ticket machine. At half past eleven, the pickpocket stole again at Piccadilly Circus. He pushed a young woman on a busy Tube train. She dropped her shopping and while she was picking it up, he ran away with her hand- bag. Half an hour later he stole a woman’s purse while she was having lunch with a friend at Covent Garden. At half past twelve he stole a rucksack from a young tourist while he was look- ing at a map at Marble Arch station. At one o’clock the police finally caught Greg F. when he was trying to steal a camera from a young boy at St. Paul’s Cathedral. And what did the pickpocket get for his trouble? A jacket (it was too small for him), a handbag full of make-up, a purse with no money but a bill for a piece of furniture and a recipe for apple pie, and a rucksack full of dirty clothes. And what else did he get? A £100 fine, and he must collect rubbish in St. James’s Park for the next two months. And what did he learn? That sometimes the police are faster than the Tube – that’s bad news for pickpockets! 1 How did he do it? a) Where was the pickpocket? Find all of the places on the map. b) Read the text again.
