The cyclist who gets the yellow jersey is … a the cyclist with the most points. b the cyclist in the fastest team. c the fastest French cyclist. d the man with the shortest time for all the races. The Tour It’s very dangerous, too. Every year there are accidents. Most of them are not really bad. But sometimes riders die. In 1995, for example, an Italian cyclist crashed his bike at 88 km an hour. He died and they think this was because he didn’t have his helmet on. Now all cyclists must wear helmets at all times during the race. When cycling fans talk about ‘the Tour’, they always mean the Tour de France. What’s that, some of you ask? Well, it’s the most famous bike race in the world. You know what the football World Cup is, don’t you? Well, for cycling fans the Tour is like a World Cup. The Tour is the most difficult bike race in the world and the rules are difficult, too. But we’ll try to explain some of them. There is a race nearly every day for three weeks in July. The men ride in teams. The teams cycle more than 3,000 kilometres before the race ends in Paris. Sometimes the Tour goes into other countries, too, for example to Spain, Germany or the UK. There are three different groups of races: 1. A race where all cyclists start at the same time. 2. A time race for each cyclist. 3. A time race for each team. There are other competitions in the Tour, too. One of them is the points competition. Cyclists get points for their position in the race each day. The man with the most points after all the races gets a green jersey. But the race for the yellow jersey is more important. The cyclist with the shortest time for all the races together wears it in the next race. The cyclist in the yellow jersey after the last race of the Tour is the winner. 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 T Test practice A Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
