DYNAMO MOSCOW A It was nearly five o’clock lastWednesday when Sarah came home from football practice with her friend, Tess. They were both tired and hungry, and it was getting cold outside. Sarah put her hand into her sports bag. “Oh, no!” she said. “I’ve left my key in my other bag.” So they sat down on the doorstep and waited for Sarah’s mum. But she always came home late on Wednesdays. The girls were soon bored. B Suddenly a voice said, “Hello, Sarah.” The girls looked up. It was Mr Barnes. He lived in the house next door. Sarah didn’t really like him. It wasn’t just because he was very old, or because he never smiled. He always seemed to be angry with Sarah. Every week he complained to Sarah’s mum about something. Sarah’s cat chased his dog, Sarah’s music was too loud, or her football flew into Mr Barnes’s garden and nearly broke a window. But Sarah’s mum said, “He’s a nice old man – and he’s very interesting. He’s just very lonely.” Sarah’s mum often helped him with his shopping and sometimes gave him some apples from the garden or some home-made cake. C Sarah told Mr Barnes about her key. “It’s cold out here on the doorstep,” he said. “Why don’t you two come in and wait in my living room?” Sarah wanted to say “No, thank you,” but she stopped. It really was cold outside and it was starting to rain. And Tess was smiling happily at Mr Barnes. So she wrote a note for her mum and put it on the door. Hi Mum, I’ve forgotten my key. We’re waiting with Mr Barnes next door. Love, Sarah Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
