Du verwendest sie, wenn du von einer Fähigkeit , einer Bitte , einer Erlaubnis , einem Verbot oder einer Verpflichtung sprechen willst. Sie sind für alle Personen gleich und können nur im simple present verwendet werden (Ausnahme: can / can’t – could / couldn’t ). Sie stehen immer mit der Grundform (ohne to ) eines anderen Vollverbs zusammen. I can play the piano, but I can’t sing very well. Can/Could you turn on the lights, please? May I use your toilet, please? Will you switch on the TV, please? Would you help me with the luggage, please? I don’t feel well. I must see a doctor. You should send off your application today. Mit May …? kannst du sehr höflich um etwas bitten . (Du kannst hier auch Can / Could …? verwenden; May …? klingt jedoch noch höflicher.) Mit Will you …? /Would you …? kannst du auch eine Bitte , einen Wunsch ausdrücken. Dabei klingt would noch höflicher als will . Mit must kannst du ausdrücken, dass etwas notwendig ist. Mit should drückst du aus, dass etwas gemacht werden müsste, sollte . Mit needn’t drückst du aus, dass etwas nicht notwendig ist. Mit mustn’t drückst du aus, dass etwas verboten , nicht erlaubt ist. Mit may kannst du auch ausdrücken, dass jemand etwas darf . Mit won’t /wouldn’t kannst du ausdrücken, dass du dich weigerst , etwas zu tun. I won’t clean my room.
