Red Line 3, Coursebook
Sir Ector looked inside the blanket. “It’s a beautiful baby boy!” he said. He was very surprised. “His name is Arthur. You must tell everyone that he is your son. One day he will be a very important man.” Sir Ector smiled at the child. “He can be a brother for Kay,” he said happily. “Thank you, Merlin!” “Remember,” said the wizard, “don’t tell anyone that I gave you little Arthur.” And with these words he changed into a huge, black bird again and flew out of the window into the moonlight. For the next fifteen years people in Britain had a terrible time. King Uther died and the country had no king. All the lords fought against each other. They all wanted to be king. They attacked each other’s castles. They burnt villages which belonged to other lords. The people who fought for them had no time to look after the farms, their animals and their families. Thousands were hungry. Chaos ruled the land. There was no peace, only war. D “There’ll be no peace until one of us is king!” said one of the lords. They needed to decide who would be king of all Britain. So they had a big meeting in London. At first they talked but soon they were all shouting. One of the lords drew his sword but suddenly they heard a terrible noise. There was lightning and thunder, black clouds filled the sky and heavy rain fell. Suddenly they saw a big, black cloud. It was coming nearer and nearer! The cloud stopped and then it changed into an old man in a black cape, with a long nose and a white beard. “Stop fighting!” said the old man. “Wh-who are you?” asked the lord with the sword in his hand. This was an old man but he was very scared. “I amMerlin theWizard,” Merlin said. “Our country needs peace!” “We know that, Merlin!” said another lord. “But how? Tell us, which one of us shall be king, O GreatWizard!” shouted a third lord. “None of you!” said Merlin. “The king of Britain is not here.” “How do we find him, Merlin?” a fourth lord asked. “Follow me,” said Merlin. It was almost dark but the lords could see something. It was a large, white stone. In the middle of the stone was a sword. It was a beautiful sword with jewels on its handle. On the white stone, the lords could see some gold letters: 112 one hundred and twe l ve surprised [ s3:*praIzd ] – erstaunt , anyone [ *enIw0n ] – irgendjemand, moonlight [ *mu:nlat ] – Mondlicht , to attack [ E*txk ] – angreifen , to burn [ b3:n ] – (ver-)brennen , to belong (to) [ bI*lON ] – gehören (zu) , Lord [ lC:d ] – Adeliger , chaos [ *keOs ] – Chaos , to rule [ ru:l ] – beherrschen , peace [ pi:s ] – Frieden , war [ wC: ] – Krieg , to draw [ drC: ] – ziehen , lightning [ *latnN ] – Blitz , thunder [ *T0ndE ] – Donner , heavy [ *hevi ] – stark , none of you [ *n0nEv ju: ] – keiner von euch , handle [ *hxndl ] – Griff 155 160 165 170 115 120 125 130 135 140 145 150 Weitere unbekannte Wörter findest du im Dictionary ganz hinten im Buch.
