A story The legend of King Arthur 110 one hundred and ten A King Arthur is more famous than the kings and queens who you can find in History books, but no one really knows if he ever really lived. If King Arthur lived, it was over a thousand years ago when Britain was fighting Saxon and Danish invaders. There are hundreds of different stories about how Arthur became king of Britain. This is just one of them… It happened a long, long time ago, more than a thousand years have passed since then. At that time, Britain was very different from today. There were forests everywhere. Wolves and bears lived there. The most powerful men were wizards and strange things happened where they walked. The king of Britain at that time was Uther. He had castles and land but he was unhappy because he had no wife. “A king must have a queen,” Uther said. “I need a son, who will wear my crown when I die.” He loved the beautiful Lady Igraine 15 20 25 30 35 5 10 C but he wasn’t able to marry her. She was already married to the Duke of Cornwall. “How can I make Lady Igraine love me?” Uther asked himself. Uther was a fighter. So he decided to fight against Lady Igraine’s husband, the Duke of Cornwall, and he killed him. “Now I can marry the beautiful Igraine!” he said. But Igraine was, of course, very angry with Uther. ‘Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to kill her husband,’ he thought. ‘Now she’ll never love me!’ One night love-sick King Uther was having supper alone in his castle. “Oh, how can I get Igraine to marry me?” he asked himself. Suddenly a big, black bird flew into the room through an open window. The bird sat down on a chair. As Uther looked at the bird, it slowly changed into a very old man in a black cape. He had a white beard, a long nose and angry red eyes. legend !*ledZEnd? – Legende , Arthur !*A:TE? – männl.Vorname , no one !*nEUw0n? – niemand , Saxon [ *sxksEn ] – sächsisch , Danish [ *denS ] – dänisch , invader [ n*veIdE ] – Invasor , to pass !pAs? – vorbeigehen , then [ Den ] – damals , wolf [ wUlf ], pl. wolves !wUlvz? – Wolf, bear [ beE ] – Bär , powerful [ *paUEfl ] – mächtig , Uther !*u:TE? – alter männl.
