They were wizards, so Harry is a wizard, too. Now he is at Hogwarts School where he can learn to do magic and to play Quidditch, a sport on broomsticks in the air. Hogwarts is a school in a castle, and the pupils live in four ‘houses’. Harry and his friends Neville Longbottom and Hermione Granger are in Gryffindor house. They do not like Draco Malfoy, a boy in Slytherin house. Today the two houses have got their first flying lesson together. Harry is excited about this. But Draco says he can already fly and Harry does not want to look silly in front of him. At three-thirty that afternoon, Harry and the other Gryffindors went outside for their first flying lesson. The Slytherins were already there, and there were twenty broomsticks on the ground. Their teacher, MadamHooch, arrived. “What are you all waiting for?” she barked. “Everyone should stand next to a broomstick.” Harry looked down at his broom. It was old. “Put out your right hand over your broom,” called MadamHooch, “and say, ‘Up!’” “Up!” everyone shouted. Harry’s broom jumped into his hand, but Neville Longbottom’s didn’t move. Maybe brooms, like horses, knew when you were scared, thought Harry; it was clear that Neville wanted to stay on the ground. MadamHooch then showed them how to climb on their brooms. “Now, at the sound of my whistle, you jump up from the ground,” said Madam Hooch. “Go up just a few feet and then come back down. When you hear my whistle – three – two –” But Neville was nervous and jumped before MadamHooch gave the signal with her whistle. “Come back, boy!” she shouted, but Neville flew up very fast – twelve feet – twenty feet. Harry saw his scared white face, saw him fall from the broom and –WHAM – he was back on the ground. His face was in the grass. MadamHooch checked how he was. Her face was white, too. “Broken arm,” she said. “Come on, boy – it’s OK, get up.” Then she looked at the others in the class. “I must take this boy into the school. Don’t go near those brooms or you’ll be out of Hogwarts before you can say ‘Quidditch’.” Neville went away with MadamHooch, and Malfoy started to laugh. “Did you see his face?” The other Slytherins laughed, too. “Look!” said Malfoy. He ran and took a ball out of the grass. “It’s that silly thing Longbottom’s grandma gave him.” It was Neville’s Remembrall, a magic ball. It told him when he didn’t remember to do things. “Give that here, Malfoy,” said Harry. “I think I should put it where Longbottom can get it – how about – at the top of a tree?” “Give it here !” Harry shouted, but Malfoy was already on his broomstick. So he already knew how to fly. He flew up to the top of a tree and called, “Come and get it, Potter!” Harry took his broom in his hand. “ No !” shouted Hermione Granger. 35 40 45 50 55 60 5 10 15 20 25 30 flying !*flaIIN? – Flug-, Hogwarts !*hOGwC:ts? – Name einer Schule, Quidditch !*kwIdItS? – Name eines Spiels , broomstick !*bru:mstIk? – Besenstiel , Neville !*nevIl? – männl.Vorname , Longbottom !*lONbOtEm? – Nachname , Hermione !h3:*maIEni? – weibl.Vorname , Granger !*GreIndZE? – Nachname , Gryffindor !*GrIfIndC:? – Eigenname , Draco !*dreIkEU? – männl.Vorname , Malfoy !*mxlfCI? – Nachname , Slytherin !*slIDErIn? – Eigenname , ground !GraUnd? – Boden , madam !*mxdEm? – Frau , Hooch !hu:tS? – Nachname , scared !skeErd? – verängstigt , whistle !*wIsl? – Pfeifen , signal !*sIGnl? – Zeichen , broken arm !+brEUkn *A:m? – gebrochener Arm , out of … !*aUt^Ev? – aus … heraus E A story Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verl gs öbv
